Youth Eligibility Criteria

Referrals of youth may be made by parents, guidance counselors, teachers, and other helping professionals. Youth may also refer themselves to the program by going to see their guidance counselor and letting him/her know of their interest in the program.

RBBBS is looking for:

1. Children who are ages 6 to 13 when application is made
2. Children from single-parent homes in which there is little or no contact with the absent parent.
3. Children at-risk for not mastering SOL’s and school tests.
4. Children with low self-esteem.
5. Children not meeting their full potential.
6. Children with mild behavior problems.
7. Children with high instances of discipline referrals, absences or excessive tardiness.
8. Children who are withdrawn or unhappy.
9. Children who can benefit from additional one-to-one attention, encouragement, and positive role modeling.
10. Children with poor peer and family relations.
11. Children who are at risk of going down an unhealthy path that could eventually lead to risky behaviors such as smoking, alcohol and drug usage, high school drop out and teenage pregnancy.
12. Children who have limited resources.
13. Students with parents who will support their child’s participation.

Parental support involves completing an application and cooperating with the intake procedures and match support requirements.

"Cooperating with the match support requirements" entails each parent doing everything possible to make sure their child is ready when the Big comes to pick their child up for an outing, their child is dressed in clean clothes, the parent or other responsible adult is home when the Big brings their child back after an outing, responsible communication with agency staff is maintained, and coordination of outings is maintained between parent, Big,and Little.
